Creating a Memorable Barbershop: 5 Ways to Stand Out

Like with starting any new commodity business, there are branding challenges from the very beginning. You need a theme, the right equipment, brand touches, and to get the word out. A barbershop is no different.

If you search Google for a “barbershop near me,” you will find dozens of search results in your local area. From chain salons/barber shops like Great Clips, Sports Clips, to the many locally run shops around your area the number of shops can be overwhelming. These are all your competitors. So the first question you should consider when starting your own barbershop is – “How can I stand out from the competition?”

Besides the obvious of giving high quality cuts and shaves, there are a few other ways to become memorable in your area. In this article, we’ll discuss 5 ways to stand out against your competition to ensure your new barbershop stays relevant and most importantly busy.

  1. Create a Memorable Environment

Barbershops today need to be more than just the classic quick cut, barber pole out front, with your barber in a white apron. While that strategy will attract some local traffic, it’s not always enough to compete long term, especially in cities filled with cheaper chain options.

The good news is that you can create a third place – an environment that gives your customers somewhere to hang out by standing out and offering a place patrons want to spend time. As it happens, the price of a good cut and shave have significantly increased over the past few years and the environment needs to reflect that for long-term loyalty.

To create that environment, start with a theme for your barbershop. A few popular themes to get the thoughts moving are:

  • Rustic chic
  • Sports
  • Sleek and modern

These themes and more start with basics like classic leather chairs and accents, a good musty scent, exposed pipes or ducts, and wooden or metal framed mirrors and windows. Or you can try a more neutral/black and white color pallet, modern furniture, and simple clean lines throughout.

Don’t just stop at the building though – a theme needs to be all-encompassing to be memorable. Other ways to create a memorable environment include custom uniforms – like barbers in customized leather aprons that accent your theme and custom hats or button ups to create that cohesive look you’re going for. Not only does your environment need to look the part but so does your team.

  1. Shine on Social Media

Creating the right look on your social media can be just as important as the barbershop itself when it comes to getting customers to come in. It’s important to not only show patrons the quality of cuts you can provide but also giving them a taste of the atmosphere that they want to be in. This is important for both locals and visitors, creating an idea of what you offer next time they’re in the area. Make sure to highlight your state of the art equipment, the products you use, and show customers having a good time.

Another great way to use social media is to have an “Instagram Wall”. This is a place for patrons to take photos after (or before and afters), incentivizing them to show off how good they look with their new cut and where they got it from. To create one, designate a wall and decorate it as an appealing (and branded) background so people can post about you and your barbers and know where you’re located. Lastly, don’t be shy – always offer to take a few minutes taking photos for someone and remind them to tag you and your shop.

Social media is a great tool at making your barbershop look like a fun and safe environment. So make sure to stay consistent with your posting, highlight good customer reviews, and have fun with it.

  1. Stand out With Your Services

Besides a high quality cut there are many other services your barbershop can offer. From the moment a patron steps into your shop, it should feel like a whole experience. For waiting customers you can have TVs or music playing with a comfortable place to lounge. Some barber shops offer beverages like water or espresso and some even offer adult beverages like beer or scotch. These small touches and attention to detail can make the experience memorable.

Once in the chair, there are many services you can add to give a special feel to your shop:

  • Hot towel service
  • Straight razor trim
  • Beard styling services
  • Head massages
  • Massage chair
  • Etc.

These have become almost as important as a haircut. You can also offer exclusive packages, like day-of services for groomsmen, parties, or events.

When it comes to the services your barber shop offers, it’s important to think about more than just haircuts. Remember even the little things can help you build trust and loyalty from your community.

  1. Invest in the Best Tools

Investing in the right tools is also a great way to make your barbershop memorable. Of course start with the essentials like clippers, scissors, trimmers, and thinners. But also make sure to invest in nice chairs, nice aprons for your customers to protect their clothing, and good uniforms for your employees

  1. Partner With Influencers and Local Celebrities

There are many barbers who have become influencers with large followings because of social media. Whether it’s a guest slot at your shop, or a permanent position, invite them in to start building up hype for your barber shop. Their following will be likely to visit, return, and post about your shop – helping you build the idea that your shop is where to go to get the best cuts.

Another way to get the word out is to reach out to local celebrities and offer free cuts. Getting athletes, news anchors, or just influential people around the neighborhood in your door can instantly give your barber shop credibility. Not only will you get credibility but you will hopefully find some local media coverage (or at least get some locals talking about you).
