The Environmental Benefits Of A Sustainable Leather Apron

A sustainable leather apron is a lifelong investment, saving you money and materials. Better still, you’ll be contributing to the fight against climate change. Read on to discover more about why you should choose a leather apron, as well as learn more about sustainable leather and its benefits.

What are the benefits of a leather apron?

At Stalwart Crafts, you’ll have an apron for life! Here’s what you can expect from us:

Superior craftsmanship

Our handcrafted leather luxury aprons have been perfected to create a balance between protection and comfort. Leather responds well to daily wear and tear and is one of the most durable materials available. The more you use the apron the softer it will become and with minimum care, your apron will last many years. We stand behind the quality of our Stalwart apron with a 12-month guarantee: on the off chance that something happens in the first year, we promise to fix your apron for free.

Easy to clean

Our leather is coated with an extra protective layer, making it easy to clean by simply wiping it down. Alternatively, mix one quart of warm water with a tablespoon of Dawn dish soap. Regular use of a leather conditioner will help keep your apron looking great year after year.

Comfort is a priority

We have worked hard to create an apron that is both light and comfortable enough to wear all day while adding an extra layer to protect from stains, heat, and/or sharp objects.

Leather saves you money

Standard cotton aprons wear over time but Stalwart Crafts leather aprons, actually, improve with age. When properly cared for your luxury leather apron will last for decades, making it a responsible investment. The superior craftsmanship and use of superior leather guarantee your apron will last a lifetime.

Leather improves with age

Unlike cotton aprons which inevitably fade and wear, Stalwart Crafts handmade aprons improve with age. Leather is one of the most durable materials out there and with time, will become more and more flexible while keeping its shape and strength.

Can leather be sustainable?

Leather actually comes from a sustainable, naturally renewable raw material – the hides and skins of animals.

The path towards sustainability starts with products that can be repaired for longevity of use – and leather is relatively easy to repair. Leather needs very little in the way of life-time maintenance and it is easy to do at home, it does not draw heavily on resources for laundering and drying for example and we increasingly see the revival of artisan skills/offering repair services for treasured leather goods.

Furthermore, leather and leather-by products can actually be recycled. Leather trimmings from the manufacturing process can be repurposed as stuffing, (into boxing punch bags for example) or combined with other materials to make composite products such as leatherboard, which is used for insoles and heel inserts in footwear.

Leather at the end of life can be ground down to use in this way too. At the very end of its life leather will biodegrade, depending on type in between 10 & 50 years. We see leather trims being creatively incorporated into wall coverings, plus more and more companies are recycling the leather component from footwear and leather goods into something new.

But then why do some people claim leather is bad for the environment? To put it simply, the difference between sustainable and unsustainable leather lies in how the leather is processed.

Production of leather is generally harmful to the environment in regards to deforestation and biodiversity, in addition to greenhouse gas emissions. This is because it’s extremely energy and water intensive to produce with lots of chemicals used in the tanning process – these tanning chemicals often get dumped as liquid, sludge or solid waste. Furthermore, cattle produce methane, 80 times worse than carbon dioxide for the atmosphere, so raising livestock for leather products is also detrimental to the environment.

So, to be sustainable, brands must weigh the input of manufacturing (such as chemistry, water, and energy) against the outputs of manufacturing (such as air emissions, water pollution, carbon emissions, and solid waste production).

What is sustainable leather?

Sustainable leather is typically used to describe genuine leather products made from either real leather or recycled leather products using more environmentally friendly production processes and chemicals used in the tanning process. The term also covers what’s known as vegan leather or pleather, which are products that mimic the texture and color of natural leather but are made from materials considered more environmentally friendly and ethically produced than natural leather.

Additionally, you have synthetic leather is often vegan and is generally made from natural materials or a combination of plastic polymers, recycled plastics, or more natural sources such as pineapple leaves, apple cores, and cork. Plant-based vegan leather may also be organic, which has further environmental benefits.

What are the environmental benefits of sustainable leather?

Studies show that eco leather production has approximately one-third of the environmental impact of leather, making using it an easy way to decrease your ecological footprint massively.

Sustainable leather is more environmentally friendly because its materials do not require the same chemicals during leather tanning nor the same amount of water and land to produce. Additionally, the process of making eco-friendly leather does not result in the high GHG emissions associated with natural leather farming.

Vegan Apple leather at Stalwart Crafts: the benefits

Imagine a material that has the durability and class of leather but contains 0% dead animal. That material is our apple leather. Made from apple pulp, a by-product of the apple juice and cider industries, synthetically combined with recycled plastic to create a high-tech leather substitute. Using this material, our craftspeople handmake stylish rustic style leather aprons, combining innovation and tradition. Perfect for cooking, gardening, painting, and crafting conscientiously. All of the glamour, none of the guilt.

At Stalwart Crafts, our Vegan Apple leather aprons come from Italian faux leather, made entirely from by-products and recycled materials.

Bespoke service

What do you want and how do you want it? Whether you’d like one apron or one hundred, we’ll ensure we make it to your specifications, so it is truly individual to you. Choose from multiple options to personalise your apple leather apron by branding it with your name or logo.

Hygenic and protective

Our apple leather is coated with an extra protective layer, making it easy to clean time after time by simply wiping down and using an anti-bacterial spray. The apron will look smart and professional, day after day.

Light and flexible

We’ve experimented to find a type of faux leather that’s light and comfortable enough to wear all day, but also environmentally sustainable. It is flexible enough for you to feel comfortable at all times. In fact, it’s like wearing an ordinary cotton apron, but with a little more body.

Save money

The initial costs for a faux leather apron might be higher than regular designs, but you’ll save money over time. Standard cotton aprons need to be washed every day and laundry bills can become a serious overhead. However, our apple leather aprons have an extra protective layer, making them quick and easy to wipe down.

Here’s a few more of the many benefits of our vegan leather:

  • 100% Recycled – made from a mixture of apple pomace and recycled plastic for minimum environmental impact
  • Stain proof – easy to clean and maintain
